Our financial client is seeking a Senior Tax Specialist. Reporting to the Director, Tax Services, the Manager of Tax Trust Services will be responsible for managing new and junior staff, leading training sessions, preparing complex tax returns, and overseeing/reviewing tax filings. The role ensures effective and timely completion of complex Estate and Trust accounts and fulfills a variety of income tax compliance, planning, and administrative functions.

Responsibilities

  • Client Engagement — Understand the business structure and associated risks. Gather relevant information for complex tax return preparation.
  • Compliance — Identify, assign, and review work in a timely manner. Perform calculations, complete required schedules, and organize information for complex returns without additional oversight. Review client accounts to ensure compliance obligations are filed on time, credit optimization is achieved, and all reporting requirements are met.
  • Relationship Building — Liaise with the Tax team, Trust staff, outside tax professionals, and clients to ensure complex income tax filing requirements are met on time, taxation issues are explained and resolved, and tax strategies are implemented effectively.
  • Subject Matter Expertise — Provide technical expertise in estate and trust taxation. Accurately review personal, estate, and trust income tax returns and schedules. Identify post‑mortem and other tax planning opportunities. Act as a technical resource to the Executive Trust Associate Team and tax personnel. Review assessment notices and prepare adjustments, objection notices, and Clearance Certificate requests. Correspond with CRA to provide requested information. Review complex returns such as GREs, terminal T1 returns, and rights or things.
  • Leadership — Participate in special projects as assigned. Manage and train junior staff. Take ownership of assigned projects with limited supervision.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of experience in an accounting or tax‑related role
  • Familiarity with graduated rate estates
  • Post‑secondary degree in accounting or equivalent
  • Experience preparing T1 returns
  • Experience preparing T1 terminal (final) returns
  • Experience preparing T3 trust and estate returns
  • Experience with tax preparation software
  • Ability to conduct research and provide technical expertise
  • Leadership skills and strong decision‑making abilities

Nice to Have:

  • CPA preferred or working toward designation
