Our leading investment management client is seeking an Assistant Tax Manager to join the team. This is a full-time 7-month contract opportunity with a high potential for extension. The position is located in Toronto and will involve working hybrid.


Reporting to the AVP, Fund Tax Compliance, the Assistant Fund Tax Manager is responsible for providing support to the Fund Tax department, supervising the review of investment tax compliance and Excel-based models for the preparation and oversight of distributions and regulatory reports for the mutual, pooled and exchange-traded funds, and assistance to the Fund Tax Manager in providing leadership to the Fund Tax team. In addition, this position supports continuous improvement initiatives of the department. It works collaboratively with the organization's Transfer Agencies, Fund Accounting, Fund Reporting, Investments Administration, Product Development & Management, Data Management, Corporate Finance, Legal, Compliance, Marketing and other counterparts.


Responsibilities:


  • Participate in the robust oversight that Fund Tax maintains of fund distribution calculations, tax provisions, tax returns and related working papers prepared by the Fund Administrator, including the review of Excel (and other) based models and processes used within the Fund Tax dept. 
  • Participate in research, analysis and implementation concerning taxation matters re: fund investments and product tax planning, analysis of new tax legislation, collaborate across departments to resolve complex distribution and tax-related issues
  • Participate in the review of tax‐related language and disclosure in the fund's prospectus, financial statements and regulatory documents, including research and interpreting industry guidance and requirements
  • Participate in the review of corporate action tax analysis and tax elections
  • Participate in the review of schedules for fund mergers, terminations, re‐balancing and assessment of special distributions
  • Ensure the team’s compliance with the documentation, implementation and update of internal control policies and procedures
  • Participate in addressing tax‐technical aspects of internal and external auditor information requests
  • Participate in developing the Fund Tax team in understanding and implementing new procedures and new issues
  • Contribute to the final review of distribution and tax‐related materials for presentation to senior management, committees and Boards
  • Contribute to developing new and junior team members in their understanding of processes, metrics, roles, responsibilities and critical interdependencies with others
  • Review annual HST blended rate calculations and SLFI tax returns
  • Recommend continuous improvement for existing processes
  • Review sales and marketing materials, as required
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned


 Qualifications:


  • Some experience in supervising and developing people is required
  • 5+ years minimum tax experience is required
  • Background in financial services industry taxation and tax treatment of securities preferred
  • Demonstrated tax research skills and experience required
  • Knowledge of fund accounting and fund reporting preferred
  • Practical understanding of NI‐81‐102 and OSC regulations preferred

Formal Education:


  • University degree or equivalent work experience in a financial services-related field is required
  • Completion of an accounting designation preferred
  • Minimum three years of professional experience within the investment funds industry preferred
  • Completion or enrollment in the CICA In-Depth Tax Course an asset 
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office products required


 Working Conditions:


  • Overtime will be required as deadlines demand
